“Our central goal at Cut & Paste is to bring the creative designers out from the faceless glow of the computer screen and into the spotlight of recognition where they can demonstrate their widely varied skills” Cut & Paste founder John Fiorelli wrote in the event introduction. Indeed, the event has done just that and more since its creation in 2005.

For those unfamiliar with Cut & Paste, the event is quite simple to follow. The rules are straightforward. 8 contestants, armed with Wacom digital tablet, has to pit against one another in several 15-minute rounds. Each round has a theme and judged by 5 luminaries of their fields. How the contestants differentiate themselves from the rest depend on their skills, talents, and their impression on the judges. In the end, only one can claim the title.

So in the unseasonably cold Saturday evening, September 15th, Cut & Paste returned to its hometown of New York City. More than 1,000 people braved the cold and lined up in front of Angel Orensanz Foundation at Lower East Side to join the festivities. Audience members were treated to mini-competitions for chances to win grand prizes like the new Adobe CS 3 software and the latest digital tablet from Wacom.

All eyes were on the stage and large projection panels front and center. Once the countdown started, the contestants scrambled for their props, tools, and their tablets. Judges, such as graffiti artist Lenny McGurr, better known as Futura 2000, Jeff Ng of Staple Design, and designer Brent Rollins, intermingled along the stage to observe the process. The highlight of the event must be when contestant Jeffrey Songco striped to his underwears and changed his outfits 3 times in front of the cheering crowd, all for the sake of a few self portraits.

All The final saw Mate, a graphic artist at the digital production powerhouse PSYOP, against Dosa Kim, long been a favorite of the audience, on the final theme of “guilty pleasure”. The added difficulty is the artwork must exist in the form on a tattoo. Both finalists went about creating, then digitally “inking” the tattoos onto digital photos. By a slight margin, Mate’s piece won this year’s title.

2007 is a pivotal year for Cut & Paste as the tournament embarks on its first ever world wide tour.
