4 Swedish artists/designers: Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken, Anna Lindgren and Katja Sävström, make up FRONT, a collective with a distinctive approach in creating furnishings. The group is in a perpetual cycle of questioning the normal design cycle. Adding spins and turns as the project precedes. One example is the Design by Animals project in 2003, in which FRONT asked “Since animals are such an integral part of human lives, can they contribute to the design process?”. In reply, FRONT created vase shaped by dog’s footprint, hanger with snake’s coil pattern, a banger based on a rabbit burrow. In a recent excursion to Japan, FRONT once again test the boundaries of possibilities of design. Utilizing motion capture cameras, not unlike those in the entertainment industry, FRONT captured imaginary sketches done in thin air. The motions were then translated into 3D digital files and put through a rapid prototyping machine, where a laser cut through layers of liquid polymers. Within hours, the imaginary sketches materialized into real furniture. » FRONT
