There’s been a graduate build up of excitement and anticipation in New York City the last few months. Finally, the wait will be over as New Museum of Contemporary Art opens the door to its new home for the general public this Saturday, December 1st, at noon. With the generosity of Target, the discount department store chain. the first 30-hours will be completely free of admission charge for visitors, coincide with New Museum’s 30th anniversary celebration, Also marking the institution’s 30th year and the opening of the new home in downtown New York will be an ambitious exhibition titled Unmonumental. Filled all 3 major gallery spaces within the new building by Japanese architectural team SANAA, the inaugural show will feature works by 30 artists from the world. This exploration of the arts will continue the next 5 months as additional works in mediums, such as audio and Internet-based, by 38 other artists will be added.
Just right before this formidable exhibition opens, EN AVANT had the unique opportunity to chat with senior curator Laura Hoptman in regard to the exhibition, the new space, and future exhibitions currently in the works.
