Despite cost overruns and delays, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (formerly known as National Grand Theater) was deemed by many to be a landmark structure even before its official opening in December 2007. Clad in titanium and glass skin, the futuristic complex by French architect Paul Andreu stands out among ancient palaces and bleak mammoths of the Communist Party in Tianamen Square. It houses 3 performance spaces, which seat a total of 6,500. In order to emphasis the theme of a cultural hub, Andreu incorporated the building into the center of a man-made lake specifically excavated for the project.
